That is unfortunate.   After you investigate further you can post an update. If I have any parts you need let me know.  Seems to me 2.6 side valve engines and the 1.6 side valve engines had some common part numbers.  -d.

Best scenario is that 2 things happened by coincidence at the same time.

No. 1  something happened that caused loss of power  and might  turn out to be a minor repair.

No. 2  It just so happened that your starter bendix gear stuck at the same time.

just a hopeful suggestion  -d.

I like that idea!  And thanks for the parts offer.
Right now, I have several cords of firewood in the driveway to split/stack, so antique (not daily driver) Rover has to wait....

I went for a drive.

I know that doesn't sound like much, but for me, and my Land Rover, this was a very big deal. It was just about 10 kms round trip to a client's and back, but it was nice to be using the truck instead of the bike - especially today.

I still need to tidy up a bit under the hood, change the coolant and engine oil in case there's any dirt in either, and do the usual pre-winter service and maintenance checks all over. But that should be straight forward and I don't expect any surprises. May be I can do all that this weekend, then have a longer drive.

Well, technically I did this yesterday:

I installed the bracket and fittings to hold my spare tyre inside the Land Rover.  This will guarantee that there will be no snow the rest of the winter to accumulate in tyres carried on the bonnet.

Thanks, Vinnie, for the parts.

I walked past the 90 this evening and thought wistfully of adventures enjoyed.

I hate painting, but the 90 was really looking scruffy.
With brush and roller, and a can of NOS Home Hardware 'International Red', there is a facelift happening.  Crude effort, but it should look better at 30 paces or more instead of looking tired at any distance.

Ben,
Don't think of your 90 as looking tired, but having great patina!
We always had IH and Farmall tractors on the farm because red was my grandfather's favourite colour (and the International dealership in Steam Mill was the closest one). Great colour choice.

Two more cake pix. My wife gave me this as a retirement present. It was made by a friend.
Tasty.

May as well keep it, more reliable than your new cars?
