Ro Ro pickup in Halifax?

Hi,
Can anyone say what is it like picking up a rover from the Ro Ro in Halifax? I wondering how to coordinate flying out there to meet it, from Calgary. How much notice to you get to pick it up and how much do they charge you for every day you are late getting there? Is there anyone or a company that can pick it up for me and store it until I get out there to pick it up? I'm looking at shipping a RR over this summer and driving it back across Canada as a vacation.
Thanks for any input/help.

Hi, well i picked up my landy from halifax when it came over from UK in August, it was dead simple, i was amazed actually, i had import fees to pay as my landy was coming in from abroad, but i simply went to the customs house first, gave them the shipping paperwork, acted a bit dumb (not too difficult for me) and basicallytold them it was the first time i ha done this (true) so needed my hand held through the process, and the customsguys couldn't have been more helpful! even photocopied the stuff i had forgotten to for me, hen i went to the shippers with all my relevant receipts and the all important release stamp, and paid them the dock fees, which are on top of the shipping fees, then once pai and stamped i went to the holding park and gave them the bundle, they then made a radio call, made me sign yet more papers to elease the vehicle from them and once checked over off i drove! i went in the day after the landy arrived to give it time to clear customs and all the inspections etc, just like the customs peple told me and all was well, hope this helps, cheers CC

How do you know when it will arrive? Do they call you when it gets there or do you assume that it will arrive on schedule? I ask because I'd have to fly out to meet it.

I have my land Rover coming into Halifax in a container this week. The vessel's agent will send you an arrival notice, in my case I got the message yesterday with the vessel due in on Wednesday evening. The main problem on timing will be if the vessel has a previous call close by in say New York and could be delayed. If the vessel is coming straight here from Europe I would imagine that once the arrival notice is issued then the vessel's arrival should be fairly accurate. In my case I am going to have to arrange for transportation from the port as the truck hasn't been started for over a year.
Hope this helps but will let you know how things go on Thursday.

I believe the Ro-Ro ferry hits Halifax and then heads down the East coast of the US so it should be a straight shot from England to Halifax.
When I shipped mine the ferry was delayed due to bad weather. My agent let me know as soon as they knew it was delayed so I just went to pick it up the following weekend.
My advice is to know what fees you should be paying, and hold your ground when someone tries to stick you with additional fees.
US customs tried to charge me import duty that I didn't need to pay (owned the vehicle for over ten years and was moving here, i.e. comes in as a personal possession)
and the port tried to charge me a "storage" fee for holding my truck until I came to collect it. I shipped to New Jersey, and if I remember correctly I had five days to collect without incurring fees. The grumpy old guy in the port was using the original due date, not the actual arrival date to asses the holding time, and it took some arguing to get my truck released without paying all the extras.
Oh, and they killed my battery on the ferry by leaving the the lights and blower on for 10 - 14 days. If you plan to drive your truck home from the port I'd go prepared for a non-running truck regardless of how it arrived at the port.

You also need to be prepared for the Dept Agriculture inspection ordering it to be steam cleaned which cost another $300 ish and is done at the only authorized place that is customs bonded. This does not always happen but it might.

The Canada Customs charged me import duties, even though the landy was on my goods to follow list, and was a personal possession, he said that whatever comes over to canada and stays permanantly, is classed as imported, and that counted for light fitting or a car, however if it ever left the country again i could claim the taxes back, it my have been due to my seasonal resident status as oppsed to full landed, but he did say that if anything came in tax free, it was not allowed to be sold, or if it was they would assess tax on the sale price, or have to have it proffessionally appraised,
As for the port fees i think they are a rip off, i paid for port to port shipping, and so that should have been included, but they said it was for unloading fees etc, i sadi well how did they expect to get the landy from port to port without unloading it? but in t wee small print it says that various "other " port fees may be payable bloody rip off if you ask me, but hey a least the landy is here, and in this weather it has passed many other so called 4x4's still in their driveways as it was "too bad for them to go out" hehe, so i guess its all realative! Cheers CC

When I shipped my Mini over from Wales 3½ yrs ago I was able to follow the boat via an actual nautical map online. I forget the link now...(been a while, LOL) but I believe it was linked from the Wallenius Willhelmsen website. (of course YMMV if you use a different carrier). I knew the name of the boat and could even tell when it pulled into port. I placed a phone call to verify...it was actually delayed a few hours, which made me go to Halifax the next day as it turned out.
Port fees were around $150-$160 as I recall, payable to some guy @ WW
Customs tried to trip me up on what I paid for the car as the receipt only showed (lets say) "10,000" (not dollars, pounds, pesos, whatever) but
thankfully I had other paperwork (not the actual receipt per se) that showed 10,000.00 Dollars Canadian
Insure all paperwork matches and that you have a proper V5 (or is it V561?) (permanent export papers from the UK at any rate)

There's a chap called Stephen Cahill, I know he can pick vehicles up and get them from the docks, he lives in the vicinity of Halifax.

You cannot have an agent clear a personal vehicle through customs. I don't know why.
