110 & Lightweight

« on: May 18, 2008, 08:40:11 PM »

I'm planning a trip in eary June to fetch the lightweight from Houston. Anybody got any thoughts of the route I should take (Con has shared some of his insight already on the phone). Two of us are going down to tow/trailer it back. I would like to find a quick route while avoiding conjested areas eg: New York (city). I was there in the 70's and it still gives me the shivers to go near there again (apologies to members from NY ).

It could turn out to be a real oddessy: two Cape Bretoners , a dealer plate , a lightweight , and no real idea beyond the flight down. Or as the Commercial goes......paying with Visa, priceless!

Con, please stand by with bail!

I only had trouble with a Boston cop, thought I was smuggling drugs. His words were " You grow the best grass around and sell it to us for the US $ " hmmm,  I wonder if the licence plate on the back that was written with a black marker on a piece of plastic tipped him off?    It was an Eric Riston special      Things went much better once that blew off on the highway somewhere and I drove the rest of the way without a plate.

The date is set. Fly from Halifax to Houston on June 3rd, arriving just before noon. My buddy wants to drive the lightweight straight to SC before buying a truck to tow it with. He has never been in a series LR before. I think we'll make it to LA and he'll be screaming to buy a truck. I'm packing a donut ring and kidney belt for him. I think we can have a little fun at his expense (what else is a friend for?). I'll post a poll to see how far he gets before wanting to stop!

Before leaving Houston, I want to visit the station where a friend worked (killed in the line of duty, 1995) to pay my respects.

Two LRE's from ME have offered their hospitality. Thank you very much guys!

Don't know if you'll be passing my way but you are welcome to stop here in Washington DC if you need a break, and want to see "where it all happens"

Have tools, parts, and cold beer.

best regards
Dave in DC

Uhh,  I'm just sitting here in Nova Scotia and that offer sounds good enough to warrant a road trip.

Cheers

Thanks for the invite Dave! I might alter the plans and head towards beer.....er...I mean Washington. The plans are still pretty fluid. The flight to Houston is the only set part of the trip. PM me you phone # in case we get near DC.

I called the passport office today and was told my passport will go in the mail today. I won't feel comfortable until its in my hand (this is the Canadian gvt we're talking about! ). Passport should be here mid week. Only one week and a day to "wheels up" .

I'm excited about purchasing the rover , but the trip is also great (I haven't taken a real vacation since going to Calgary in 1999).

Heh heh, you are more than welcome Pete, any time, and the same goes for anyone on this list. There isn't much to do here LR related, unless you want to storm Capitol Hill in the lightweight. Though post 9/11 that would be a bad idea. I think brave Sir Robin of the Ottawa bunch did that (Parliament Hill) back in the 90's in his Ferret. Pretty amusing even from 500 miles away...

Guess if the timing is right y'all could come down and help me do "90 in a day"

ACP30470, sending PM...

What a trip! I got back just after noon on Sunday. It took me 4 days to drive the lightweight home from Houston (2,700 miles). I'll start a new post later in the week to detail my trip adventures. The lightweight worked great .

The S2 parts are now officially for sale. I will contact those who e-mailed me about parts before the end of the week. BTW- hoop set/canvas, tailgate, tub, bulkhead and some other misc parts are already spoken for.
